PASSPORT: DUSTIN BENTALL
Dustin Bentall – Streets With No Lights
(Patrick Donders)

1. What’s in the name/what’s in the title?
Of my record? If so, Streets with no lights was written about my love of travelling down the less beaten path. It sort of combines walking through the city on quiet side streets as well as the gravel and dirt roads in the country. Both of which are where I do a lot of my walking.
2. What’s your first musical memory?
Hearing Yellow Submarine and thinking, that’s the kind of children’s music that I like!
3. First cd/lp you bought?
The Offspring “Smash”
4. At which moment did you decide that your music had to be heard?
-
5. What was the biggest musical step you took so far?
The first time I ever stepped on stage alone. I had my first show booked to open for someone, and I was really afraid that I was going to choke so I booked a show at a little bar in my hometown (North Vancouver) for the week before. It ended up being packed to the gills with all my friends and all their parents and the works. The first few songs I’d like to have back but after that I cranked into a familiar Neil Young song felt the power of a live performance of a great song. That’s a beautiful thing.
6. You won a contest. First price is: a master class in song writing and you can chose the teacher. Who would you ask and what should the lesson be about?
I wouldn’t need that!
Just kidding. It would probably be Neil Young and the lesson would be about drinking a case of beer on the porch, and everything that goes along with that.
7. Best concert you ever saw?
That’s a tie between The Black Crowes opening for Neil Young in Montreaux Switzerland, and Jeff Tweedy solo at The Commodore.
8. Who of your musical friends is going to change the world? And how?
Adam Dobres who is my Guitar player. Why? Because he is the best guitar player in the world and he is connected to a higher power through traditional Amazonian medicine called Iawasca.
9. It’s the end of the world and everybody knows it and they ask you to sing one more song for the whole wide world ! Which one are going to pick?
It’s the end of the world as we know it, REM
10. What’s up for the next couple of months?
Some time off, then recording a new record in February, which I am extremely excited about. Its been 2 years since I recorded my record and I am long overdue. Then extensive touring for the rest of the year.
