ALIBI

The Whigs - Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip (ATO Records)
With ace songs like the terse rocker “Technology,” the sassy “Can’t Hear You Coming” and the slow-burning, psychedelic-tinged “Half The World Away,” this accomplished debut effort has the musical swagger to match the CD title.
Radio Birdman - Zeno Beach (Yep Roc Records)
Radio Birdman could be called the Australian version of the New York Dolls--a revered band that broke up nearly 30 years ago, but has returned with a CD in Zeno Beach whose tuneful garage-ish rock lives up to the band’s legend.
Bottle Rockets - Zoysia (Yep Roc Records)
These St. Louis area roots rockers have been through major personnel changes, but Zoysia is the band's strongest record since 1997’s stellar 24 Hours A Day .
The Dears - Gang Of Losers (Arts & Crafts Records)
The truly rich vocal melody makes a big comeback on Gang Of Losers , where the soaring vocal melodies of Murray Lightburn highlight a song cycle that ranges from brisk rock to grand pop.
Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards (Downtown Records)
It’s not every day there’s reason to call a band with a clunky sound inventive and fresh. But the compliments apply to Robbers & Cowards , whose angular guitars anchored by chunky rhythms make Cold War Kids a distinctive new force on the modern rock scene.
The Bellrays -Have A Little Faith (Cheap Lullaby Records)
This slamming set of funked up rock is fueled by hot playing and the fiery vocals of Lisa Kekaula. It’s the CD Lenny Kravitz wishes he could make.
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale (Def Jam Records)
As a member of Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah is certainly well known in rap circles. But Fishscale , with its combination of gritty beats and melodic backdrops, deserved much more love than it got.
The Drams - Jubilee Dive (New West Records)
Featuring three-fourths of the defunct roots rock band Slobberbone (including frontman Brent Best), The Drams outdo that former band with this poppy yet gritty CD.
The Walkmen - A Hundred Miles Off (Record Collection Records)
Influences such as Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground are apparent, but this shambling yet charming CD stands out with strong songs and a sound that’s distinctive.
The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls in America (Vagrant Records)
With Craig Finn’s rough and ready vocals complementing some ragged guitar glory, The Hold Steady boast an appealing garage-ish sound.

8) Archer Avenue - We watched the headlights, we watched the stars ( voor mij dé exponent van lekkere "nieuwe" rock/twang bandjes als Patty Hurst Shifter, The Dexateens, Wheels on Fire, Band of Horses, Riviera en Ox. Allemaal lekker en eigenlijk allemaal op 8)
9) The Hiders - Valantine (NY & Crazy Horse als heerlijke deja vu, altijd al mijn favoriete deuntjes)
10) Oldseed - When you laugh the world laughs with you when you cry you cry alone - (alleen de titel al. NY solo, heerlijke deja vu, altijd al mijn favoriete deuntjes)
10b en verder.
Ook veel gedraaid en van genoten. Americana puur sang: Boris & The Saltlicks, Malcom Holcombe, The Kamikaze Hearts, Tim Easton, Cam Penner & The Gravel Road, Eric Athey, David Wolfenberger en Douglas Greer.
2007:
Net in huis en daardoor te kort om over te oordelen maar nu al hele goede indruk: Matt Ellis - Tell the people
Eervolle vermelding:
Rosa Records.

Bloodshot Records Live in The Trenches-DVD. Van Bloodshot Records dus.
4. James McMurtry - We Can´t Make It
5. Dolf Brouwers a.k.a.

Heruitgave:

At our house we love all Pat McLaughlin records and especially his new

The Weepies new album. (Forget what it's called and it's in the car and it's raining so I don't want to go get it).

For just a plain old/good/wierd Americana instrumental record I'd have

YO ZUSHI

1. Modern Times - Bob Dylan
The third in what Bobcats have come to refer to as the Second Trilogy,
Dylan's latest is as effortlessly assured as "Love & Theft". But where that
album was characterised by its unwavering focus on a kind of
electric-minstrelsy aesthetic, "Modern Times" guides its listener through a
gentler terrain; one that acknowledges suffering, but through wiser, more
compassionate eyes. The songs are as playful as his "Basement Tapes" best,
and the performances are stellar.
2. Orphans - Tom Waits
The range of material is staggering - blues, Kurt Weil covers, Disney-rock,
ballads - but it's all unified by the singular vision of America's most
romantic barfly. Of its three discs, "Bawlers" (predominantly containing
folk / jazz songs) is the most consistent; it is also his single best work
since "Raindogs" over twenty years ago.
3. The Letting Go - Bonnie Prince Billy
A loose and unpretentious collection of songs recorded in Iceland, "The
Letting Go" is another gem in the Will Oldham canon. As ever, the songs
refuse to fall back on any easy, attention-grabbing hooks. As a result,
subtler details in his phrasing and imagery are allowed to slow-burn over
time to constantly surprising effect.
4. Espers II - Espers
Their most important contribution to the notional New Folk movement since
the excellent "Weed Tree" LP. Espers reveal themselves to be a kind of
roots-Portishead, moving beyond the Fairport Convention-inspired origins
that saturated their first self-titled release.
5. I Am Not Afraid Of You and I Will Beat Your Ass - Yo la Tengo
Pop perfection from the great indie band of our time.

KEES VAN DEN BERG (Lezer)

1) Bob Dylan, Modern Times
His Bobness is terug!
2) Johnny Cash, American Recordings V A Hundred Highways
Aangrijpend!
3) Bruce Springsteen, We shall overcome, The Seeger sessions
5) The Dexateens, Hardwire Healing
This rocks! Geweldige plaat op mooi label.
6) Lambchop, Damaged
Subtiele arrangementen, sfeervolle tristesse, kortom: Lambchop op z'n best!
7) The Handsome family, Last days of wonder
8) The Triffids, Born sandy devotional (re-issue)
Dé heruitgave van 2006: weids en diep!
9) John Ewing, Augustine,

Dylan was mentioned on a leading eight lists, including one No. 1 and three No. 2 finishes. "Modern Times" earned the artist his first No. 1 on The Billboard 200 since 1976's "Desire." It was also his highest debuting album and his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. An inverse point system -- where 10 points were given to a title listed at No. 1, and one point given to a No. 10 entry -- was used to determine the rankings.
Dylan's labelmate labelmate Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome -- The Seeger Sessions" and Gnarls Barkley's debut album, "St. Elsewhere" (Downtown/Atlantic) finished second and third, respectively. Upstart U.K. rock group Arctic Monkeys came in fourth this year with its Domino debut, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not."
The set garnered six mentions, four of which ranked it as album of the year. And although it was only mentioned on three lists, Tool's "10,000 Days" scored the highest per-vote point average thanks to a pair of No. 1 mentions as well as a No. 3 showing. Dylan joins recent Critics' Choice winners My Morning Jacket ("Z," 2005) and Franz Ferdinand ("Franz Ferdinand," 2004). FRANS LOMANS (ROSA RECORDS, SPORTWEEK, HANX)

1. Drew Nelson - Immigrant Son
2. Robin Dean Salmon - Gasoline
3. Darrell Scott - The Invisible Man
4. Todd Adelman - Henry's Diner
5. Chris Cubeta and the Liars Club - Faithful
