1. IRON AND WINE - THE SHEPHERDS DOG An incredible album that rewards
multiple listens and my pick for the best album of the year.
2. RADIOHEAD - IN RAINBOWS My close pick for second favorite. After
all the hype of how it was released (or not), the album stands on its
own as their best work since Kid A, maybe better.
3. WILCO - SKY BLUE SKY Their best studio album. Even better when
played live. Possibly the best band in America.
4. VIC CHESNUTT - NORTH STAR DESERTER I've been saying this is his
finest since West of Rome (1992) but this is is best album ever.
5. SPOON -GA GA GA GA GA My vote for most fun album of year. Great
live act also.
6. WHITE STRIPES - ICKY THUMP Their finest album yet. inventive and a
total blast.

since 1981's masterpiece Pirates. Beautiful and inpiring.

essential.

REISSUES / UNRELEASES / DISQUALIFIERS and honorable mentions

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - THERE'S A RIOT GOING ON (reissue) My most
listened to album of year and a revelation.
DEXATEENS - SINGLEWIDE (unreleased) Not the one I co-produced. This
one is newer, better and still unreleased (produced by Mark Nevers). A
total departure and fantastic. Look for it in 08.
BIG STAR - 3RD (vinyl reissue, correct sequence) Finally, the correct
order, or at least the best sequence I've ever heard. A masterpiece
that sounds MUCH better on vinyl
PATTI GRIFFIN - CHILDREN RUNNING THROUGH An amazing artist at her
best. The duet w/ Emmylou sends chills at every listen.
PJ HARVEY - WHITE CHALK A quiet subdued beautiful work of art. Her
best in 7 years.
ECCENTRIC SOUL vol. 7 - HOME SCHOOLED (The ABC's of Kid Soul) This is
exactly what it says, the kid groups that didn't hit it big like the
Jacksons. INcredible.
BETTYE LAVETTE - THE SCENE OF THE CRIME I couldn't really put this in
my top ten, as my band and my Dad played on it and I co-produced it,
but it really deserves special mention and "Talking Old Soldiers" would
have put it in my top ten had I not been in any way involved.

CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS

I spent a lot of money in 2007 buying obscure American folk recordings and Townes Van Zandt albums. There were, however, several new albums that caught my ear this year. Keep in mind that I’m not a critic – I just know what I like and sometimes I can’t explain why. So, that said, here are my top ten favourite albums of 2007:

1) Panda Bear - Person Pitch
I love that this album makes me feel like I experienced the 1960s, even though I was born in 1978.

2) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
There were only a few new songs that gave me chills and one of those is My Body Is A Cage, when the pipe organ comes in at full volume. Overall, it’s a beautifully dark album.

3) M.I.A. - Kala
I don’t really like to dance but I found myself moving uncontrollably to this album at a Halloween party. At first, I figured it was because I was drunk. But then I listened to it sober, and realized it’s just a damn good album.

4) Radiohead - In Rainbows
Like the rest of the world, I was taken off-guard by the announcement of a new Radiohead album just ten days before its release. Furthermore, I refused to pay any less than $10 for the album, just because I knew it was going to be great. Simply put, it met my expectations and is my second favourite Radiohead album behind OK Computer.

5) White Stripes - Icky Thump
This was a great album to listen to on a hot day with the windows down. Another winner from Jack and Meg.

6) Marissa Nadler - Songs III: Bird on the Water
Dark lyrics, a beautiful voice and haunting melodies.

7) Porter Wagoner - Wagonmaster
A fitting final album. It’s always great to see someone go out at the top of their game.

8) Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
A lot of people can’t stand Animal Collective but I think they’re fantastic. And For Reverend Green is my favourite song of the year.

9) Slackeye Slim - Texas Whore Pleaser
Maybe it’s a conflict of interest for me to list this album because Slim is a good friend of mine, but I don’t care - this is some of the most original country music to come out in a long time and I’m proud to recognize it.

10) Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
My girlfriend and I literally just bought this album a few days ago. And while I’ve only listened to a few times, I’m already impressed by the amazing array of instruments used. It’s inspiring.

Nummer 1 is geen verrassing. Jimmy is mijn favourite. Heb hem dit jaar 7 keer zien optreden waarvan 2x tijdens zijn Ribbon of Highway Endles Skwyway tour. An evening decicated to the music Woody Guthrie.

Tot mijn laatst aangeschafte cd's behoren: The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street, Arcade Fire - Funeral, Chet Baker, Joe Pass en Brian Wilson – Smile.

AART HARDER

1 Wilco – Sky blue sky (eenzame klasse)
2 Joe Henry – Civilians (pronkstuk)
4 JJ Grey & MOFRO – Country Ghetto (Soul!!!)
5 The Shins – Wincing the night away (mysterie, durf en creatief)
6 Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Beatlesque nivo)
7 Iron and Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog (Zijn meest consistente en de beste baardmans van alle baardmannen in 2007)
8 Dolly Varden – The panic bell (TE ondergewaardeerd & goed)
9 Homemade Knives – No one doubts the Darkness (Melancholie, melancholie en zo mooi)

De “net niet” nummer 11: Patty Griffin Children running through (best female vocal!!), Richard Stooksbury – South (de echte southern spokesman), Ian Siegal – Swagger (UK rules the blues), Bettye Lavette – The scene of the crime (een crime, zo zonder blazers, anders…), Jimmy Lafave – Cimarron Manifeso (americana pur sang)

JAN THE LAZYMAN (HANX, ROOTSCLUB, VREDESBURGER)

1. Folkuke – Folkuke

2. Sam Baker – Pretty World.
Hij kwam binnen als toen ik voor het eerst Blaze Foley live at the Austin Outhouse horde.

3. Amy Winehouse – Back to Black.

4. Ramsay Midwood - Popular Delusions & the Madness of Cows

5. The Gourds – Noble Creatures

6. 357 String Band – Ghost Town

7. Dirty Sweet - Of Monarchs and Beggars

8. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss – Raising Sand

10. Blaze Foley – Cold Cold World

Live

Amy Winehouse – Paradiso Amsterdam
Richard Thomson – Paradiso Amsterdam
The Spoolies – Maloe Melo Amsterdam.
Texmex Experience – Jovita’s Austin Texas
Danny and Dusty – Paradiso Amsterdam
Tay Mahal – Paradiso Amsterdam
Pedro Delgado’s – April Feesten Amsterdam.
Rootsclub – Aprilfeesten Amsterdam
Marc Olson – Huis Verloren Hoorn
Dirty Sweet – Paradiso Amsterdam.

FRANS LOMANS (PANORAMA, ROSA RECORDS, ALT COUNTRY NL, HANX)

1. SAM BAKER: Pretty World
2. DWIGHT YOAKAM: Dwight Sings Buck
3. CHRIS ALLEN: Goodbye Girl And The Big Apple Circus
4. DAVE GLEASON’S WASTED DAYS: Just Fall To Pieces
5. LUCINDA WILLIAMS: West
6. STEVE EARLE: Washington Square Serenade
7. GURF MORLIX: Diamonds To Dust
8. T-99: Vagabonds
9. TWO COW GARAGE: Three
10. .357 STRING BAND: Ghost Town
11. MAVIS STAPLES: We’ll Never Turn Back
12. THE HOLMES BROTHERS: State Of Grace
13. JOE ELY: Silver City

BENNY MULDER (BLOGGER)

1. Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back (geen noot verkeerd, geweldige stem en superieur geproduceerd door Ry Cooder)
3. Sam Baker - Pretty World (een zeer verrassende 'zegzanger')
4. Southern Tenant Folk Union - Southern Tenant Folk Union (Dillards-fris, meesterlijke zang, helaas heb ik nog maar 3 tracks in mijn bezit; UITBRENGEN in Nederland, please!)
5. Ry Cooder - My Name Is Buddy (zwaar onderschat album)
7. Lyle Lovett - It's Not Big It's Large (op het 'jazzy' openingsnummer na Lyle's beste cd sinds jaren)
8. Linda Thompson - Versatile Heart (oh, die stem!)
9. Gerard van Maasakkers - Zicht ('wereldplaat' uit Brabant)

WARREN MALONE

1. Back to black - Amy Winehouse
Always loved her since i first saw her on Jools Holland doing "stronger than me" about 5 years ago.
2. Shacktown Road - Norman Blake, Nancy Blake and Tut Tayor
Norman is my hero and he always delivers more on a colaboration.
3. Easy Tiger - Ryan Adams
This took me a while but when  it finally hit me it really made an impression - not literally.
4. Wai Notes - Dawn Mccarthy and Bonnie Billy
Rough and noisy but strangely listenable.
5. Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys
Great tunes Great band.
6. Ash Wednesday - Elvis Perkins
He has a good story.
7. Keep Your Silver Shined - Devon Sproule
This is just spectacular, great lyrics that can go missed on a first listen.
8. Washinton Square Seranade - Steve Earle
I buy everything he does and this one is surprisingly very good, i thought his last couple were a little formulaic.
9. Songs Of Love And Hate (2007) - Leonard Cohen
A classic.
10. Live at Massey Hall 1971 - Neil Young
What can you say, its Neil, solo, on stage with nothing but great great songs each became a classic.

KEES VAN DEN BERG (MUZIEKLIEFHEBBER)

1) Iron & Wine - The Shepard's dog
Prachtalbum!

2) Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

4) Homemade Knives - No one doubts the darkness

5) Rock Plaza Central - Are we not horses?

6) Band of horses - Cease to begin

7) Wilco - Sky blue sky

9) Sam Baker - Pretty World

10) Bruce Springsteen - Magic

1) Stars of the Lid, And their refinement of the decline
Bijna orkestrale ambient, hangend tegen neo-klassiek, maar vooral heel erg mooi. Troostmuziek.
2) The National, Boxer
6) The Shins,Wincing the night away
7) Modest Mouse, We were dead before the ship even sank
8) Devotchka, How it ends
Gogol Bordello meets Calexico in een cafeetje waar Yann Tiersen speelt; zoiets. Aanstekelijk fraai
9) Arcade Fire, Neon Bible
10) Animal Collective, Strawberry Jam

The Mangler (DJ Jeff)

01. Mott The Hoople - Fairfield Halls Live 1970
Yes, this really is the holy grail of live Mott's early, pre-All The Young Dudes years.02. Gram Pasrons - Gram Parsons Archives Vol 1
These long lost tapes live up to the hype. Gram is the spiritual father of this little genre and this two disc set is 120 minutes of audio bliss.
03. Clientele - God Save The Clientele
Perhaps their best record yet? I've always said these guys sound like Nick Drake fronting Arthur Lee & Love. This disc might be a little more Love than Nick Drake but it is still great.
04. Dead Rock West - Honey &
